Echoes of Nature
In response to the decline of Lebanon's traditional handicrafts—once vital to its cultural and economic fabric—this project envisions a dynamic, interactive space in Qatar dedicated to preserving and celebrating Lebanese craftsmanship. By fostering communication, engagement, and tangible experiences, the initiative aims to rekindle appreciation for these artisanal traditions, ensuring their stories and techniques endure for future generations.

Traditional Handcraft Workshops
"Handicrafts are the true reflection of a nation's history and traditions, embodying its cultural heritage through the hands of its artisans."

Crafts Guiding Spatial Experience
The project centers around four traditional crafts: pottery and ceramics, carpet weaving and textiles, stained glass, and woodworking. Each craft follows a distinct series of steps — from raw material preparation to final detailing — shaping the spatial narrative of the center. These making processes inspire the ergonomic flow, material choices, and aesthetic articulation, creating environments that reflect the sensory richness and rhythm of craftsmanship.

An easily accessible storage space

A shared pottery wheel setup

A comfortable workspace for focused, detailed work
Pottery studios require specific environmental conditions, particularly air ventilation and sunlight control. This double-window system addresses both needs:
-
By closing both windows, airflow and sunlight are fully blocked
-
By opening the blue window, only sunlight enters
-
By opening the sliding wooden window, only air circulates through the space.
-
Opening both windows allows access to both light and air, giving artisans full control over their working environment.
In addition, the studio is equipped with easy access to sinks and essential amenities, creating a welcoming and functional space for detailed craftwork.

Central Public Workshop

A Central Public Workshop space characterized by inclusivity, communication, interaction, and exploration.
Characteristics of the Space:
-
Perpendicular access points lead into a central, radial hub, encouraging movement and interaction.
-
A grand entrance shifts visitors from a linear path into a high-ceilinged central space, creating a dramatic spatial experience.
-
Layering of natural textures, patterns, and materials enriches the environment.
-
Traditional detailing is reinterpreted, such as a chandelier that creates a lowered ceiling effect for added intimacy.
-
A slightly sunken workshop, defined by contrasting flooring, enhances immersion and integrates natural elements.
-
Artisanal elements like a stained-glass skylight introduce filtered light and a tactile connection to craftsmanship.
